Lateral Attorneys

As part of Mirick O'Connell's ongoing efforts to expand the depth and breadth of our practice, the firm actively recruits and hires lateral attorneys with a proven record of performance. In fact, a majority of our attorneys had prior law practice experience before joining Mirick O'Connell.

Historically, our lateral attorneys have been attracted to Mirick O'Connell based on a culture that places a premium on uncompromising standards of excellence in client service, while permitting its attorneys and staff to achieve an effective work-life balance. In addition, as a leading Central Massachusetts based law firm, Mirick O'Connell offers its attorneys the intellectual challenge that is found in the handling of complex legal issues with a commensurate opportunity to become intimately involved in the community, often times working alongside clients in support of charitable and civic endeavors.

We believe that the most effective attorneys are those who are engaged not only in the practice of law, but in the pursuit of personal interests and in the support of the communities in which they work and live. In keeping with this philosophy, our attorneys have been privileged to count many of their clients as personal friends.

Entry-Level Associates

An attorney's development and training do not end with law school. At Mirick O'Connell, we recognize that for many new attorneys law school did more to pique their interest in the law than to provide a clear-cut decision about their desired practice area. For this reason, first-year associates spend their first nine months rotating through the firm's major practice groups. They not only gain valuable broad-based experience in multiple areas of specialization but are better able to decide on an area of specialization for which they are well suited.

During the first year of practice and beyond, our attorneys are provided with exceptional training through educational opportunities both within and outside the firm, as well as regular formal and informal guidance and feedback.

We hire attorneys who are capable of assuming responsibility early. Accordingly, our first-year associates do far more than conduct library research and review documents. It is not unusual for our first-year associates to have direct client contact, to assist in the negotiation of transactions, or to appear in court and to attend depositions.

We believe that at Mirick O'Connell you will receive the best of both worlds: the chance to engage in complex legal matters to help you become an excellent attorney, while maintaining a desirable quality of life.

If you are interested in applying for a first-year associate position, please contact Betsy Landry, Director of Human Resources, at careers@mirickoconnell.com. We look forward to hearing from you.

Summer Associate Program

Mirick O'Connell is proud of its highly effective summer associate program. Our goal is to provide summer associates with substantive work from each of our practice areas and with as many attorneys as possible. Typically, more than fifty percent of our attorneys work with summer associates on assignments and training, with the workflow overseen by a coordinating attorney. In most cases the summer associates work directly with the assigning attorney, and can expect timely and constructive feedback. The summer program also includes opportunities to observe in the courtroom, at the closing table and at client meetings. Social functions and regular lunches provide excellent opportunities for summer associates to become better acquainted with the firm's attorneys and with life at the firm.
